PRISM MEETING, THURSDAY, 8PM in BH 218!!! That’s right! Note the room change. We’re going to be outlining the upcoming semester, so get excited! It’s gonna be fabulous!

On another note, we’re going to start showcasing various events on campus that are held by organizations that are LGBT friendly. This will probably happen on Mondays, but for now it’s goin’ down today! So, without further adieu…

TODAY(Dec. 1st):
Besides World AIDs day, there is also a Food and Agriculture forum in the SUB Down Under. “A forum about educating our minds to make more ethically sound food choices.” Super awesome. There will be free food and guest speakers! Semi-sponsored by ECO.

SATURDAY (Dec. 5th):
“Food, Inc.” Film Screening! “The film examines large-scale agricultural food production in the United States, concluding that the meat and vegetables produced by this type of economic enterprise leads to inexpensive but unhealthy and environmentally-harmful food.” Awesome and informative! If you click on the link it will direct you to the Facebook group where you can see a trailer for the movie. This is also sponsored by ECO (we just love them) and Truman’s Student Senate (I’m sure we would love them too!).

SUNDAY (Dec. 6th):
Just Say Ahhh: A Relaxing Day for Self-Care. OH MAN OH MAN. Us here at the PRISM website are REALLY excited for this event. “Come relax with healthy snacks, spa treatments, yoga, journaling, and tips to remain calm during the stress of finals!”, says the Facebook event description. We are so there. Battling stress during the last weeks of classes is really important! Sponsored by Truman’s WRC (Women’s Resource Center), which is DA BOMB.

We are overstuffed with delicious food. We are relaxed and not thinking about school. Break is beautiful. Can we please extend it three more weeks and just skip finals and the last two weeks of classes? That would be lovely. To further distract ourselves from the impending last three weeks of school, here’s PRISM News Friday!

• Watch: Statement By Gay Mother Of Slain Teen Jorge Mercado: Remember that Puerto Rican young man who was brutally murdered? Well, here’s his mom with a wonderful message that we really should take to heart.
• HIV+ME: “I was infected the first time I had sex”: Ever heard about HIV+ME? It’s a series of videos that tell the story of various homosexual males and their dealings with HIV. This video was really powerful. We encourage you to watch ‘em all. As a personal aside, wrap it up yo!
• Tastes Like Homo?: This is just funny. We wonder what homo tastes like. Fantastic, we’re sure.
• Lady Gaga Wants People To Shout Down Homophobic Rappers: Lady Gaga discusses homophobia in music. What a wonderful message. You go girl!
• Being Gay Is Not A Choice. What If It Were?: Excerpt from this article: “So much controversy has developed from this question of biology versus choice that we forget that, in terms of the law and government action, it really doesn’t matter. Everyone should have the right to be him or herself.”We agree whole-heartedly with this sentiment and this article.

We will also provide you with a flyer to jump-start those creative juices! Deadline for submissions is February 28, 2010, which is a long way off. It’s Friday! Us here at the PRISM Blog have decided to do something new. During the week we will collect various new stories that are of interest to us (and, we hope, to you as well) and post them up on the blog with links to the original article and our own comments. So, go on and get yourself informed! OH and have a wonderful Thanksgiving break. We plan on eating our weight in food, and we wish the same for you. Indulge yourself a little!

• Drag Queen Leads Flash Mob on Sydney’s Bondi Beach: This is just pure awesome. Look at those moves! Also, look at that sunshine and warm weather. Sooo jealous. We should totally do this here at Truman!
• The Kardashian Gals Detest Hate: Although us here at the Prism blog aren’t big celeb aficionados, we’ve definitely heard of the Kardashian sisters and may have even watched one or two episodes (read: probably all of them) of that reality show they’ve had. Anyway, we find it awesome that these three are getting behind the NOH8 campaign and think you should too!
• As Catholics And Gays Battle Over Marriage Equality In DC, Elections Board Rejects Prop 8-Style Ballot: Have ya’ll heard about this? The first part of the article talks about a great thing — i.e. the rejection of a Prop 8-Style ballot initiative — and then the second part of the article talks about the ridiculousness that is the Catholic church wherein they say that, if forced to recognize same-sex married couples, they will discontinue all social service programs in the DC area. All we have to say is: ridiculous.
• Buenos Aires Grants First Marriage License To Gays: Go go Latin America! Look at that, despite laws banning gay marriage in the region, Buenos Aires is turning a new leaf and givin’ the first same-sex couple marriage license! Us here give that a TWO-THUMBS UP!
• On Not Being Like Other Boys: An interesting article about gaining straight society’s approval, especially in reference to LGBT youth.
• Principals, Bus Driver Ignored Pleas For Help From High School Student Beaten With Metal Pipe For Being Gay: Article title is pretty self-explanatory, but dang. Poor student. I would definitely watch the news report as well because what his mom has to say is really spot on.

Also, these articles are obviously not all that happened in the LGBT world this week (did you hear about that Puerto Rican gay man? Real crappy), so we encourage you to go out and find more news! Anyway, we recently we stumbled upon this website: Towleroad, a great gay news resource. What news outlets/websites do you all use for LGBT news? We’ve always been a fan of HRC Back Story, but are definitely on the look-out for new news locations! So go ahead and abuse those comments and whatever you all suggest will probably end up in the sidebar! You’ll practically be famous!

Last night was pure, utter success. Drag show, beautiful. Those drag queens were lookin’ real good! Oh and of course we mustn’t forget the group of drag kings, also very well done! Furthermore, the raffle was wonderfully successful, giving two lucky people some very fun things to play with. If frightened by the girth, using them for jousting could be a fun alternative.

One thing that definitely stuck with us from the event was when Madison ended the drag show by saying that we, as students, are the future and thus have the power to create change and foster equality. We hope that you all really take those words to heart and think about what that means, especially in relation to LGBT issues. The dance theme was, “We can’t marry, but we can dance”, and hopefully, through our efforts, we can change that to, “Hey now we can marry, but dang we can still drop it like its hot!” Now that’s what I’m talkin’ about!

Lastly, but definitely not least importantly, us here at the Prism website want to thank all of the hardworking people that helped set up for and that worked during the dance. Without you all it would never have been as successful! And we would also like to thank all of those that attended.
