New semester! New semester!

SO, as you all are aware there hasn’t been a new post since December! MY BAD! Will definitely be getting back into the swing of things as the semester gets chugging along, so check back regularly! Oh and if anyone else is interested in making posts to this blog, please don’t hesitate to let me know in the comments / through e-mail / personally.

OH OF IMPORTANCE:
PRISM MEETING, THURSDAY, 8PM in BH 218!!! That’s right! Note the room change. We’re going to be outlining the upcoming semester, so get excited! It’s gonna be fabulous!

World AIDS Day + Interesting Events on Campus!

Today, December 1st is World AIDS Day. An important time to remember those affected by AIDs and get educated about AIDs to avoid continuing the stigma attached to it. Pink News has a great article about the year’s biggest HIV and AIDs news stories as well as related articles that can help you have a little bit of a better idea about HIV/AIDs. Also, an event is being held tonight at the Eternal Flame (by Kirk Memorial) to commemorate this day. It will be from seven to eight and here’s a link to the Facebook event.

On another note, we’re going to start showcasing various events on campus that are held by organizations that are LGBT friendly. This will probably happen on Mondays, but for now it’s goin’ down today! So, without further adieu…

TODAY(Dec. 1st):
Besides World AIDs day, there is also a Food and Agriculture forum in the SUB Down Under. “A forum about educating our minds to make more ethically sound food choices.” Super awesome. There will be free food and guest speakers! Semi-sponsored by ECO.

SATURDAY (Dec. 5th):
“Food, Inc.” Film Screening! “The film examines large-scale agricultural food production in the United States, concluding that the meat and vegetables produced by this type of economic enterprise leads to inexpensive but unhealthy and environmentally-harmful food.” Awesome and informative! If you click on the link it will direct you to the Facebook group where you can see a trailer for the movie. This is also sponsored by ECO (we just love them) and Truman’s Student Senate (I’m sure we would love them too!).

SUNDAY (Dec. 6th):
Just Say Ahhh: A Relaxing Day for Self-Care. OH MAN OH MAN. Us here at the PRISM website are REALLY excited for this event. “Come relax with healthy snacks, spa treatments, yoga, journaling, and tips to remain calm during the stress of finals!”, says the Facebook event description. We are so there. Battling stress during the last weeks of classes is really important! Sponsored by Truman’s WRC (Women’s Resource Center), which is DA BOMB.

Well that’s it! Hope you have a wonderful day and maybe we’ll see you at these events! We sure hope so!

PRISM News Friday!

Gay News Friday!

We are overstuffed with delicious food. We are relaxed and not thinking about school. Break is beautiful. Can we please extend it three more weeks and just skip finals and the last two weeks of classes? That would be lovely. To further distract ourselves from the impending last three weeks of school, here’s PRISM News Friday! Continue reading

Youtube: a wonderful resource

A wonderful video about homosexuality, debunking myths! Definitely a must see.

Acoustic/Folk Artist That Rocks: RYAN DOYLE

As much as us here at the PRISM blog can’t stop listening to Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance, thanks to Tyler Oakley we have stumbled upon a gay acoustic/folk artist named Ryan Doyle. Check out his myspace here and download his four albums for FREE on his blog here. We promise you won’t be disappointed!

Have any other artists you’d like to share with us here? Use those comments! They’re lonely, for sure. We always love new music!

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS!

Hey all! We hope you’re enjoying your first luxurious day of break! We slept in late, took a beautiful shower (yay for actual water pressure!) and had cinnamon rolls for breakfast. But this post isn’t really about all of that. You may be excited to know that in the upcoming Spring semester, PRISM is going to put on the first annual Coming Out Monologues, which is REALLY AWESOME. The Coming Out Monologues (TCOM for all you acronym-loving peeps) were first put on by the Queer Alliance at UC Riverside back in 2007. Us here at PRISM thought that it’d be a great thing to do for the upcoming semester, and so:

We are currently looking for submissions! We would really like to make this a community event with stories from our very own TSU population. An event has been made on facebook, click here to go there and read a little bit more about submitting, etc. The basic process, if you are interested, is to e-mail coming.out.tsu@gmail.com and request an application. We will also provide you with a flyer to jump-start those creative juices! Deadline for submissions is February 28, 2010, which is a long way off. Submitting earlier would be wonderful, but we understand how busy everyone is, so we decided to give you all ample time. We are all very excited about this and hope that you are too! Thanks!

Prism News Friday!

It’s Friday! Us here at the PRISM Blog have decided to do something new. During the week we will collect various new stories that are of interest to us (and, we hope, to you as well) and post them up on the blog with links to the original article and our own comments. So, go on and get yourself informed! OH and have a wonderful Thanksgiving break. We plan on eating our weight in food, and we wish the same for you. Indulge yourself a little! Continue reading

Gay News

Hello all! We hope that you’re staying dry and warm on these crappy rainy days. Us here at the Prism website wish we had rain boots and an umbrella that actually kept us dry!

Anyway, we recently we stumbled upon this website: Towleroad, a great gay news resource. What news outlets/websites do you all use for LGBT news? We’ve always been a fan of HRC Back Story, but are definitely on the look-out for new news locations! So go ahead and abuse those comments and whatever you all suggest will probably end up in the sidebar! You’ll practically be famous!

Prism dance: Total success.

Dear loyal, wonderful readers,

Last night was pure, utter success. Drag show, beautiful. Those drag queens were lookin’ real good! Oh and of course we mustn’t forget the group of drag kings, also very well done! Furthermore, the raffle was wonderfully successful, giving two lucky people some very fun things to play with. If frightened by the girth, using them for jousting could be a fun alternative.

One thing that definitely stuck with us from the event was when Madison ended the drag show by saying that we, as students, are the future and thus have the power to create change and foster equality. We hope that you all really take those words to heart and think about what that means, especially in relation to LGBT issues. The dance theme was, “We can’t marry, but we can dance”, and hopefully, through our efforts, we can change that to, “Hey now we can marry, but dang we can still drop it like its hot!” Now that’s what I’m talkin’ about!

Oh, and if you have pictures from the dance feel free to e-mail them to prism@truman.edu and we’ll try to get them up on here! Lastly, but definitely not least importantly, us here at the Prism website want to thank all of the hardworking people that helped set up for and that worked during the dance. Without you all it would never have been as successful! And we would also like to thank all of those that attended. We hope you had fun, made good decisions and are still smiling about it on this gray, dreary day!

Affectionately yours,

PRISM

I know I know we keep posting about this dance, but it’s gonna be off the chain! As evidenced by this awesome chalking. Check it out on your way from MO Hall to Baldwin (the middle walkway that runs through the quad!)
